Love Jesus

Well, February is here!
Welcome, month of love <3!

For the next 14 days at least, we will be inundated with commercials, ads, & grocery shelves
full of reminders that Valentine's Day is quickly approaching!
Although it's rather a commercial time & a holiday without a major significance in our family,
we do celebrate & always have.
Nothing grand or over the top, but what's not to celebrate where LOVE is concerned?!

Today though, I just wanted to share this little reminder to
LOVE JESUS MORE THAN YOU LOVE ANYTHING!
Give Him your utmost devotion & admiration.
Let nothing sidetrack you from loving Him to the fullest.
Make Him your #1 priority.
And realize that without Him, aside from Him, apart from Him,
there is no love ... because He is love!

True fulfillment in any relationship is because of the fulfillment of true love that only He brings to our life.
He is the everlasting love.

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your mind.
Matthew 22:37

Seasons

Seasons ...

I love living in a region of the country that has distinct seasons.
My good ol' Indiana home is right in the heart of the Midwest & we experience glorious season changes.
The heat of the summer & the cold of the winter are my least favorites, although they do bring
something to the table & I'd miss either of them if they were gone ... a little bit ;)
My very favorite season of all though is the fall & what a perfect one we've had this year.
It's been warmer than usual & the rainy spring has caused the trees to keep their leaves longer ...
& what amazing colors the leaves are!
We've been blessed to take a couple country drives & really soak in all the autumn colors.
I can't even put into words how much we've enjoyed the simple pleasure of riding through the country
& looking at all the beautiful scenery together.
It has done our soul good.
(I know I don't share too much on a personal level here on the blog, but my husband's younger
brother passed away 4 weeks ago, unexpectedly at the age of 39.
These country drives have been good for James & me ... some down time, some quiet reflection,
some laughter & some tears.)

near Story, IN

I was thinking last night & again this morning about the cozy factor that fall time seems to usher in.
James switched the furnace on & right away I could smell that familiar scent that comes from the
heater after it's not been on for a while.
(I always enjoy that in the vehicle too ... it's a similar smell.)
As I was going up the stairs, the house was completely quiet except for the sound of the heater,
I felt such a comforting coziness.
All felt right in my world.
And I was all the sudden overwhelmed with gratitude ... a roof over my head, a warm home,
a comfy place to sleep, safety & security ... all things that can be so easily taken for granted.

Who would think that an autumn season could evoke such strong & deep emotion, right?

A few weeks ago, I took the summer blanket off our bed & put on the quilt that we use
during the colder months.
That night when we got into bed, I could feel the marked difference in the weight of the quilt
as compared to the lighter summer blanket.
It felt heavy ... and secure ...
& I think I slept better than I had in several nights.

There's something to the whole cozy thing ... I'm completely convinced.
And is being cozy a huge deal, a game changer?
No, of course not ... but there's something that a cozy feeling does to your soul.
It's feels kinda like a hug.
A warm home, a burning candle, the smell of something baking in the oven, your favorite slippers,
a soft pillow or blanket ...
Reminds me of the saying about the little things ...
how we finally realize that they were the big things after all.

And one more thing ...
I love a good-smelling house.
I've noticed though that I don't burn as many candles in the summer months
& I also don't use my Glade oil plug-ins as often.
No particular reason, I just don't do either as often.
During the fall & winter, lighting a candle is one of the first things I do of a morning.
So back to the oil refills for my plug-ins ... I bought some sort of apple scent for the lower level
of the house and a pumpkin scent for the upper level.
Talk about aroma therapy!
A good-smelling house also does something for my spirit!
From the minute I plugged those in & the wonderful smells started waifing through the air,
the cozy meter has jumped a notch or two ;)
And every person that's come in the door has commented how wonderful it smells in the house!
Again, the little things ...

As there is a purpose to every changing season outdoors/externally,
there's just as significant purpose to the seasons we go through in our own lives.
Although I hate to see the summertime come to a close & I begin to dread the snow & cold
that's around the corner, in another way I almost feel ready for it.
The autumn season is a wonderful reprieve in between ... and as fall settles in,
I have no doubt that I am ready for it.
The same applies in my spirit.
There are things that I've dreaded & could hardly fathom how I would roll with the changing
circumstances that life brings ...
but when the time finally arrived, I was ready & the changed seemed less difficult & more 'right'
than I ever could have imagined.
And really, that's the mindset that has carried me through those times ...
things change, people change, seasons change.
And we can do nothing to stop it.
So acknowledging that & being flexible enough to roll with the changing tides is the best approach.

One last thing to close out this introspective blog post, I am currently in the season of my life
where I am making forward strides in the 'living simpler' department.
It's been on my heart & we've been moving in that direction for a couple years,
but I'm slow to let go of things.
I've read about some who decide to simplify and in one weekend, they've decluttered,
cleaned out every closet, & donated box after box to Goodwill.
Boom - done - living simple just like that.
Well, that's definitely not the approach I've taken.
I often wish I could ruthlessly purge without over thinking every single thing I lay my eyes on.
I am here to say that I'm doing much better though ... & in the last several weeks,
lots of things have gone out to the trash.
I have a large pile of clothes to give away ... & our son has been doing the same thing in his closet.
It feels so good.

Last week, I threw away all the microfiber dishcloths that I've hated from the first time
I used them a year or so go.
I had kept using them, thinking with every single use how much I disliked those cloths.
Why?
Why did I keep on using them?
They went in the trash can & I bought some new clothes ... the 'plain ol' jane ol' dishcloths
like I had in the first place.
Why in the world did I wait so long to do that?
And I also pulled out these beautiful cloths that a sweet blog reader sent me a couple years ago.
I loved the idea that someone took the time to hand-make these for me ... a total stranger.
But I am trying to live by the motto 'don't save the good china for another day ... use it today'!
So I decided that these clothes will be used.
I took a picture to remind me of how pretty they are ... & every time I use them,
I will think of the sweet lady who blessed me with them.

Changing seasons.
And I am ready for them.

And for the biggest change that's rocking our world since our twin sons got married last year
and our baby boy turned 18 a few weeks ago ....

We are going to be grandparents in May!!

Our oldest son & his sweet wife are expecting their first baby!
James & I will have new names ... Pops & GiGi!

I found the most perfect devotional/journal over a year ago & I had to buy a couple of them for the future.

It's called "Waiting in Wonder:  Growing in Faith While You are Expecting."

Talk about seasons changing!

We are incredibly excited for Garrett & Carissa & so grateful that God has blessed them
with a sweet new life coming in the spring.
God gives the most amazing gifts, doesn't He?!

So, here's a big hug from me  ... & hopes that you are enjoying this autumn season ...
taking in the beauty of nature, spending time with the ones you love, & counting your blessings.

There is always something to be thankful for.

There is NO Confusion in Truth!

I joined Tony Evan's 'Praying God's Names for 30 Days' this week
and the starting day for me was yesterday.
Each day, you get an email that includes one of the names of God, what it means,
& a prayer that goes along with it.
Short, sweet, but oh so power packed!

I can't seem to shake yesterday's, so I thought I'd share the good word.
{And encourage you to sign up and start praying these wonderful & powerful names of God with me!}
{Sign up HERE}

The name of God for yesterday was:

Jehovah El Emeth

It means LORD GOD OF TRUTH!
The verse:  Into Your hand I commit my spirit;
 You have ransomed me,
O Lord (Jehovah), God (El) of truth (Emeth). Psalm 31:5

Here's where it especially got good ... the prayer!

"Jehovah El Emeth, thank you for the perfect purity of truth.
Thank you that there is no confusion in truth.

Truth is your viewpoint on a matter, and thank you that you have not sought to hide your truth
or make it difficult for me to grasp.

Your truth is readily available to me in your Word.
Thank you for giving me the ability to read, Jehovah El Emeth,
and for giving me the ability to discern your truth from what the world tries to paint as truth,
but rather is a lie from the devil.

Thank you for the power of your truth that makes life’s choices easier to make
when aligned under your truth."

Oh my word!
How could so many POWERFUL sentences be packed into one prayer?!
If that doesn't make you want to seek for HIS truth, I don't know what will!

The sentence that stuck out overall to me was, "There is no confusion in truth!"
That applies in every area of life.

You've heard of people who tell so many lies to so many different people
that they can't keep their story straight?
They can't remember what they've told to whom & before long, they've gotten themselves a confused mess!
So much easier to just tell the truth!

{I'm sad to say that I even know professing believers who stretch the truth, twist the truth,
embellish the trust, exaggerate the truth ... none of which is ok!}
{If this is you, STOP!}

You know what they say about honesty, it's the best policy.

If you apply the statement "There's no confusion in the truth" to the world today,
that makes a statement all by itself.
Seems like folks are confused on what gender they are, what a real hero looks like,
who marriage is between, should they stay married or just act like their vows meant nothing,
what's worth saving: a baby or a lion, where they stand on important political issues,
or should they just flip-flop back & forth on based on public opinion.

And let's not even get started on politicians.
They tell bold-faced lies, & we have news reel after news reel to prove it, & are never held accountable!
Yea, we could all go on all day right here.

Reverse it:  the further you get from the truth, the more confusing things will be.

I heard the statement years ago, if it doesn't make sense, it's not true!
Pretty cut & dry, but I've seen that prove out over & over.
The further things get from the truth, the more confusing they become.
Kinda sounds like the world we're living in, huh?!

I can't imagine not having a personal relationship with Christ & trying to filter through all the garbage
that politicians & people in power are painting as the truth.
So many people are being deceived.

I encourage you today, pray to Jehovah El Emeth, Lord God of Truth!
If you are confused, about anything, pray for Him to open your eyes & for the truth to be revealed to you.
Distance yourself from dishonest people & dishonest doings.
Desire to know the truth ... seek after it.
And lastly, dig into the Word, our trusted source for all that's true.

  Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth;
unite my heart to fear your name.
 Psalm 86:11

Our Master Bedroom

Our ever changing master bedroom.
...Sigh

Not everything changes.
Certainly not the BIG things.

But little things like pillows & wall decor.

I just can't seem to nail it.

Here are some of the past looks.

The chevron pillows were the first ones that I ever made.
And the large antique frame to the right, I added chicken wire to the back so I could clip things to it
like keepsakes, cards, pictures, etc.
I made the banner that swags from the top with strips of burlap & chevron fabric left from the pillows.

I took the frame down this spring ... wanting less of a shabby look, I suppose.

Here's what my side of the bed look like now.
I love the wall hanging filled with pictures taken in South Carolina in 2013.
I made this a few months after that vacation & I'm pretty sure I took pictures so I could blog about how to make it, however, the pictures are nowhere to be found ... thus, I never blogged about it.

The general idea:  I bought 9 frames {8x10} at the Dollar Tree & spray painted them cream.
I outlined/hot glued each frame with rope, tying a knot at one end.
I bought a piece of foam board & glued on each frame after placing the picture inside.
Lastly, I made a 'hanger' on the back with twine & hung it on the wall.
It hung on James' side of the bed til I just moved it to mine.

When we purchased our 2nd house about 18 years ago, we bought this cherry sofa table
& the matching round coffee table.
So, in place of a nightstand, I use the sofa table.
It goes perfectly with our cherry bedroom set.

I'm currently lamp shopping, but not finding what I'm looking for.

Also on my side of the room, the armoire with the TV inside & the sofa.
I always wanted a sofa in my bedroom & seeing how this room is SO huge, I got what I wanted.

We bought this sofa when we bought the cherry tables, so it's a few years old.
Guess the crooked seam that bugs me just shows that this sofa has been well-loved ;)

My mother-in-law made my cream curtains about a year after we got married,
making them about 23 years old!
Classic cream tab tops that haven't gone out of style.
In fact, I loaned Gunnar & Abigail a set of these to use at their house.

There's one more thing on my side of the room ... our treadmill  =/
I've never been a fan of it in our room, but that's where it had to be.
Now that we have 2 empty bedrooms, we'll probably move it out sometime or another.

James has a chair on his side, along with his nightstand and basket for books.
I should've hidden those cords.
Bad blogger.

I took a piece of the same chevron fabric that I used on the pillows to cover the center
on the cream wall hanging for an updated look on a piece I've had for years.

And this plant ledge, well, I've switched things out many time over, but never seem to get it right.
I love that there are two outlets up there so I can flip the switch & it's all lit up.

Right now, the plant ledge is missing this big clock that sat right above the door.
I've moved it to the living room, but I think I'm putting it back cause it's a bit too small for the space.

We replaced the flooring in our master bathroom a while back & it's a big improvement
over the vinyl that was there before.

We also painted it the lightest grey we could find.
It's just a hair from being white.

I bought these sheets last spring {I think} cause I went NUTS over the orange gingham.
And I found them just at the time I had decided that our bedroom needed some orange.
{James' favorite color and a good accent with the light aqua walls.}
I use them from spring to early fall, but I have to say, I'm always glad to have my white sheets back on.

Here's what the bed currently looks like.
The sweet bicycle/basket pillow was a recent gift from my sweet DIL, Abigail.
She know how much I love bikes & baskets.
And the fact that the bike is parked on the beach, bonus!

I replaced the smaller cream fleur-de-lis with a big dark one {it used to hang in the living room}.
{I also have a thing for fleur-de-lis.}

Across from the bed is this fun wall, complete with a new bicycle wall hanging.
All the framed pictures were taken on vacations in South Carolina.
The aqua bicycles in the oval frame were the inspiration for the master bedroom color scheme.

Live in the sunshine ~ swim in the sea~ drink the wild air.

And so although I can never get our room how I want it {maybe I'm not sure how I want it},
there is one thing I am sure of ....

This room brings us so much comfort!

In the evening, when come upstairs to close out our busy & tiring day,
this room serves it's purpose perfectly.

With the rest of the room dark & whimsical lights twinkling in the palm tree, it kinds feels like a warm hug.

So while it may have seemed for a minute like this was a blog post about decorating ...
or it may have even seemed like a blog about being discontent with the room, the decor ...
or about how it just a hodge podge of mix-match stuff that we've had for years
& isn't nearly what I want it to be ...

It's really about NONE of those things.

It's a blog about being grateful.

At the end of the day when we crawl into our comfortable bed, with a mattress that feels amazing,
sheets that are clean, a room that's cool when it's hot outside & warm when it's cold,
I feel abundantly blessed.
More than I deserve.

I may never get each piece of decor just right.
I will definitely never have a magazine-worthy look.

I will, though, have a heart of thanks for the many blessings that have come my way.
I am thankful for a husband that provides.
I love our home & all it's imperfections ... the shelter & comfort it that our 'home sweet home' brings.
Cause it's filled with love.
Always has been, always will be.

And that, my friend, money cannot buy.

**My style has changed so much through the years that I'd love to start from scratch.
I feel like not much in our current home is representative of my style, at this point.
We will be 'down-sizing' in a year or so & are currently deciding to build or buy/remodel.
I'm biding my time with all my current furniture/decor until that time comes.
I can barely contain my excitement at the endless possibilities.

The Hundred-Foot Journey || My Thoughts About This Sweet Movie

bicycle + basket + girl wearing skirt/dresses
+ beautiful scenery from a foreign country
{namely Italy or France}
family + food + love

credit

These are the key components that I love in a movie.

I get pretty excited when I'm watching a movie & any of the above pops up!
Not ganna lie.

credit

And I have, yet one more time, picked one that has several of these things.

What?!
How does this happens?
I don't know these things just by looking at the case or reading the review.

But when I pick a movie, like I'm totally the one picking it,
I somehow end up choosing one with these things!
It's like I'm drawn to them by some inexplicable force.

I blogged about the irony once before here.
You must click over & read just so you can see the legitimacy of this whole phenomenon.

Last night, we watched The Hundred-Foot Journey, a movie I picked.
{We had a code to get a freebie from our On Demand package.}

credit

I have to admit, I was feeling iffy during the first 15 minutes,
as to where the movie was going or if we were going to to stick with it.
{It's a bit slow in the beginning.}
Once the story gets started though, in the beautiful French countryside nonetheless,  I knew I was all in.

Now, I'm certainly no movie critic & wouldn't know how to correctly write a review if I tried,
but I'd describe this one as a feel-good movie with a great ending,
which is precisely the 'easy to watch & enjoy' kind of movies I often prefer.
Yea, I'm the mushy, hopeless romantic type ;)
It checks all the right boxes ... all the ones I mentioned at the beginning of this post.

The location is beyond gorgeous!!
The real town where the movie was shot is the French medieval village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in Tarn-et-Garonne in the Midi-Pyrenees region of France.
Located in the Alps in the southwest area of France, it is said to be a perfect travel destination
because it's not as heavily visited by tourists.
{Duly noted & added to bucket list.}

credit

These 2 buildings are where the story takes place.
This is the hundred-foot journey.

credit

Another thing I loved:  hearing the French language.
Gaahhh...it's so beautiful & romantic ;)

credit

And then there's the food aspect of the story.
Don't all real romances have good food as a common thread?
To say that The Hundred-Foot Journey seduces the heart through food in as understatement.

credit

Isn't this quaint, oh-so-French kitchen just adorable?

credit

Outdoor dining & string lights hanging above = perfection!

credit

And there are several quotes I like from the film, I am completely crazy about this one:
FOOD IS MEMORIES.
That certainly rings true in my life.

Here's the clip:

And I just can't get enough of Marguerite's dresses!!

The other big theme throughout this movie is FAMILY.

Family is a huge priority in The Hundred-Foot Journey.
The main character, Hassan, places himself within the context of his family legacy from the very first page.
I love how he introduces his own story by starting with the story of his grandfather ...
And this theme stays strong to the very end of the movie.
Although Hassan found great success, he was lonely & ultimately longing for his family.
His joy was somewhat hollow without having them to share it with.
We see the importance of being a part of a bigger picture,
which is really what makes us who we are.

The Haji family is a unit throughout the movie,
a way of life which always seems to be
more strongly demonstrated & adhered to in other cultures than here in the US.
The disregard for maintaining a strong family unit by much of our society
{starting with the grandparents clear down to the youngest child}
 makes me so sad.
The breakdown of the family is a big reason our country is in the shape it's in today.
James & I have determined that teaching about the importance a strong family unit
would be a priority in our own family.
He has told our sons over & over & over through the years ... family first.
They treat us, as parents, with respect & they come to us for counsel & advice
knowing no one has their best interest at heart like we do.
He's raised them to look at their brothers as their best friends & confidants.
He's trained them about the importance of being loyal to your family
& has said to them countless times, "Remember, you are a Pennington."

This has hung on our wall for many years.
{sorry it's blurry}

Be true to who you are and the family name you bear.

Our family motto is 'God & Family.'
When the boys hug their dad at night or when they are leaving, that is what they say,
'God & Family'.

In September, James bought each of our sons a ring with our family crest on it.
{For years, they all worked together researching the Pennington crest
& deciding the things they would add to it ... there's a certain amount of variability.}
They worked with a jeweler to get the design just right.
There are some awesome shots of all 4 of the Pennington men at the weddings
with their rings & I'll share it as soon as I can get it.

So, you can see how important family is to us
& why that theme resonated so deeply with me.

In the movie, Papa says these words,
"Remember sweet boy, you are a Haji. Always remember. A Haji".

That stays with Hassan through every important moment of his life.

Makes me think of a southern phrase that I grew up hearing ... 'Remember your raising'.
In other words, remember who you are & where you come from.

The closeness and connection of family is a gift that we all should value & hold on to,
and it ultimately will be our guiding force every step of the way.

If you are a looking for a sweet & endearing movie & haven't had the chance to see
The Hundred-Foot Journey, go for it!
It covers so many themes:  culinary, culture, family, friendship, and achieving your dream ...
& romance thrown in too.
And you know what?
It's almost Valentine's Day.
Get in the kitchen together, make a meal, & then watch this movie!
