There is NO Confusion in Truth!

I joined Tony Evan's 'Praying God's Names for 30 Days' this week
and the starting day for me was yesterday.
Each day, you get an email that includes one of the names of God, what it means,
& a prayer that goes along with it.
Short, sweet, but oh so power packed!

I can't seem to shake yesterday's, so I thought I'd share the good word.
{And encourage you to sign up and start praying these wonderful & powerful names of God with me!}
{Sign up HERE}

The name of God for yesterday was:

Jehovah El Emeth

It means LORD GOD OF TRUTH!
The verse:  Into Your hand I commit my spirit;
 You have ransomed me,
O Lord (Jehovah), God (El) of truth (Emeth). Psalm 31:5

Here's where it especially got good ... the prayer!

"Jehovah El Emeth, thank you for the perfect purity of truth.
Thank you that there is no confusion in truth.

Truth is your viewpoint on a matter, and thank you that you have not sought to hide your truth
or make it difficult for me to grasp.

Your truth is readily available to me in your Word.
Thank you for giving me the ability to read, Jehovah El Emeth,
and for giving me the ability to discern your truth from what the world tries to paint as truth,
but rather is a lie from the devil.

Thank you for the power of your truth that makes life’s choices easier to make
when aligned under your truth."

Oh my word!
How could so many POWERFUL sentences be packed into one prayer?!
If that doesn't make you want to seek for HIS truth, I don't know what will!

The sentence that stuck out overall to me was, "There is no confusion in truth!"
That applies in every area of life.

You've heard of people who tell so many lies to so many different people
that they can't keep their story straight?
They can't remember what they've told to whom & before long, they've gotten themselves a confused mess!
So much easier to just tell the truth!

{I'm sad to say that I even know professing believers who stretch the truth, twist the truth,
embellish the trust, exaggerate the truth ... none of which is ok!}
{If this is you, STOP!}

You know what they say about honesty, it's the best policy.

If you apply the statement "There's no confusion in the truth" to the world today,
that makes a statement all by itself.
Seems like folks are confused on what gender they are, what a real hero looks like,
who marriage is between, should they stay married or just act like their vows meant nothing,
what's worth saving: a baby or a lion, where they stand on important political issues,
or should they just flip-flop back & forth on based on public opinion.

And let's not even get started on politicians.
They tell bold-faced lies, & we have news reel after news reel to prove it, & are never held accountable!
Yea, we could all go on all day right here.

Reverse it:  the further you get from the truth, the more confusing things will be.

I heard the statement years ago, if it doesn't make sense, it's not true!
Pretty cut & dry, but I've seen that prove out over & over.
The further things get from the truth, the more confusing they become.
Kinda sounds like the world we're living in, huh?!

I can't imagine not having a personal relationship with Christ & trying to filter through all the garbage
that politicians & people in power are painting as the truth.
So many people are being deceived.

I encourage you today, pray to Jehovah El Emeth, Lord God of Truth!
If you are confused, about anything, pray for Him to open your eyes & for the truth to be revealed to you.
Distance yourself from dishonest people & dishonest doings.
Desire to know the truth ... seek after it.
And lastly, dig into the Word, our trusted source for all that's true.

  Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth;
unite my heart to fear your name.
 Psalm 86:11

Your Ministry To Others...

Galations 5:13  For you were called to freedom, brothers.
Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

1 Corinthians 15:58  Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding
in the work of the Lord,  knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Laugh With Your Happy Friends!

This was on my calendar yesterday.

Laugh with your HAPPY friends when they are happy!

That's the Message Bible version of Romans 12:15,
which reads 'rejoice with those who rejoice...' in the ESV.

This immediately reminded me of something I shared with our ladies at a fellowship/Bible study last week.
Our topic was 'Thriving in Our Relationships.'

The quote I shared was this:  Pay close attention to those who don't clap when you win.

While I love the quote and know there's massive amounts of truth to it, it makes me sad.
It makes me especially sad then we see that kind of behavior from someone we call a friend  ...
or a family member.

And it's so close to the scripture reference in Romans that we can clearly see that we are disobeying
God's Word when we act in this way.

We must then ask:  What causes this kind of behavior?

Why aren't people happy when we are happy ... or why don't our friends clap when we win?
Why don't we rejoice when our family or friends have something great happening in their lives?

I can only think of one answer & boy, it's a bad one ... a cruel one according to God's Word.
   J E A L O U S Y

The Bible says in Song of Solomon 8:6 that 'jealousy is cruel as the grave
the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.'

James 3:16 says: For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist,
there will be disorder and every vile practice.

There is nothing good that comes from a jealous spirit {cruelty, disorder, vileness}.
I want to avoid any and all of these TOXIC behaviors.

Jealousy is a relationship killer!
If you have the slightest suspicion that you have jealous tendencies, pull them out by the roots.

It often shows up as selfishness ... thinking only about me, me, me.

...how this makes me feel,  how this fits into my plan, why didn't I get that recognition,
why don't I ever get new things, everyone has a better life than I do.

Instead of rejoicing when others rejoice,
say when a friend or family member gets a promotion or buys a new car or new house,
we find ourselves envious of their success or their things.
We immediately think of how it relates to us or how it makes us feel,
instead of just being happy with our happy friends.

These are the people that aren't clapping when you win!

And what does this behavior say to God, the giver of all good things, the blesser, the provider?

God, I'm not happy that You've chosen to bless them.
I'm not happy that you are answering prayers for them.

When we can't rejoice when our friends are rejoicing, we are ultimately showing God that we don't like
that He has showered blessings on the lives of our family & friends.

So, if you see yourself in any of these descriptions & aren't sure how to change this destructive behavior,
let's look at some ways to identify jealousy & to get rid of it!

  • Identify the situations that are triggering these toxic feelings

You are resentful of one who gets something new:  car, house, job, jewelry, boat, etc...
Keeping up with the Joneses

When you see your family/friends succeed in any way, you feel inferior and question why it's not
happening in your life.
Counting other's blessings instead of your own

You feel upset when a friend spends time with someone besides you.

You constantly compare yourself or your life to others.
You can't admire someone elses beauty without questioning your own

  • Counteract these toxic feelings by checking your heart through God's Word

Through earnest prayer, ask God to reveal to you your own heart.

Jealousy is a condition of the heart.

When we allow toxic behaviors & negative things into our heart, they form our thoughts and attitudes.
And if these wrong things in our hearts go unattended, they will become deeply rooted
and hard to deal with.
The quicker you can detect a wrong heart condition and get it straightened out, the better off you are.

Proverbs 4:23  Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

As Christians, checking our hearts needs to be a regular practice.
We can go through the motions and live our Christian lives, all the while, our heart is full
of toxic feelings and attitudes that are not pleasing to God.
These not only hurt ourselves, but everyone else around us.

And notice it doesn't say for anyone else to guard your heart.
It doesn't say God will guard your heart, or even your pastor will guard your heart.
It says you need to guard your heart.

Psalm 51:10  Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Matthew 7:12   So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them...

Ultimately, acting right -- treating others right, goes back to one of the simplest principles of all time:
Treating others as you want to be treated yourself.
Doesn't get much plainer than that.
And when we operate with LOVE as our guiding force, it's easy to live out these scriptures in our life.

1 Corinthians 13:4  Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it his not arrogant.
John 13:35  By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

Life is not always happy.
In fact, it can be downright hard & frustrating at time.
That's what makes the happy days all the more appreciated.
And a true friendship, one not twinged with jealousy, can be such a sweet joy.

"Many might have failed beneath the bitterness of their trial had they not found a friend.
~Charles Spurgeon

Be the kind of friend that you want & need.
Be the friend who mirrors Jesus
not the one encumbered with the baggage of the world's skewed thoughts and behaviors.

Be that friend who laughs with their happy friends when they are happy.

And just as a side note, social media hasn't done us any favors in regards to this topic.
We can log on & look into the lives of our family & friends in an instant.
If we aren't careful, this can be a breeding ground for feelings of envy, jealousy, and self-pity.
Instead though, use this as the perfect opportunity for you to be happy when your friends are happy!

Nothing Gold Can Stay

    Nature’s first green is gold,
    Her hardest hue to hold.
    Her early leaf’s a flower;
    But only so an hour.
    Then leaf subsides to leaf.
    So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day,
    Nothing gold can stay.

      ~ Robert Frost

Change.
I don't do well with it.
It's no secret.
I've admitted it a million times.

With some serious & deliberate retraining of my thought process,
I am making successful strides in changing this.
I am quite proud of myself.

For instance, James & I celebrated our 22nd wedding anniversary this past weekend.
We left on Thursday evening & returned on Sunday evening ...
a long weekend away, just the two of us.

And in my typical fashion, as I was packing to begin the trip, I was already hating to see it end.
Yes, you understood me correctly.
We hadn't even left to go on our trip & I was feeling a bit down,
knowing it would end far sooner than I'd be ready for it to.
Who does that, right?!

So, I determined right there in that moment to redirect my thoughts
& told myself that I would not entertain those feelings again.
{Usually the day before vacation ends, I start feeling morose that it's coming to a close.
That's just typical me.}

After all, all good things must come to an end.
If James didn't have a job to come back to,
we'd never have the funds to go anywhere to start with.
And my kiddos, I always miss them terribly when they aren't with us.
No, the mundane household activities that I come back to, like laundry, dishes, chores,
aren't nearly as exciting as a long weekend at the lake,
but those are important parts of my day-to-day life.
It's the familiarity of those activities that bring stability & security ...
& both of those are needed in my life, as well.

So, I'm learning as I age.
I'm seeing the big picture & accepting it instead of fighting against it.

I was challenged by a statement that a friend made a while back.
He said that he loved change.
I had never in my entire life heard anyone say that ...
in fact, it's always been adamantly the opposite.
People usually always say, "I hate change!"
He explained that he loves the excitement that comes with new things,
new places, & new activities.
He went on to say that he gets bored easily & likes variety.
It's going to happen anyway, so you may as well embrace it, he shared.

I have thought about this conversation many times.
It seemed like he took the 'negative edge' off change.
It's true ... not all change is bad or something to dread.
I like new things, new places, & new activities too.
So, thanks to him, I've been working on myself.
When a situation arises that is going to mess with my 'norm', I say to myself:  embrace change!
When something familiar begins to shift, I say to myself:  embrace change!
And guess what?
It has worked!

That's what I love so much about the Robert Frost poem, Nothing Gold Can Stay.
It's eight lines of simple truth.

Each season brings about change.
Find something beautiful about each one, for it will soon change to the next.
Love the morning or love the evening ... either way, one passes into the other in no time at all.
The same is true with life.

If you are in a season of pain or sadness, know that it's not going to last forever.
Same goes for seasons of happiness or success ... even those things will change.
Not to say you'll never be happy or sad ever again ... not at all.
It's just that life moves on.
Nothing stays the same forever.
What seems to be the end may just really be the beginning.

One of my very favorite quotes that I just found this year is by Gretchen Rubin:

The days are long, but the years are short.

I LOVE that, although it does make me a bit sad.
The days when I had twin boys not yet three years old & a brand new baby boy,
well, those days were long.
But when I realize that in a blink of an eye,
those same three boys will be nineteen & sixteen soon,
let me tell you, the years are so, so short.

How do I make the most of this?
Live fully & purposefully ... that's what I've been trying to do.
Celebrate the little things, cause they really are the big things.
Don't wish the days away, even the sad days ... or the uneventful days ...
or the days full of laundry & chores.
Each day is a gift & will soon pass into the next.
Spend them being grateful.
A grateful heart & spirit is truly a medicine for life.
Count blessings ... be positive ... surround yourself with people who are the same.

PS) And one more thing about our anniversary, I CAN'T wait to show you  the pics
& tell you about where we went & what we did.
We had a wonderful time.
Stay tuned!

Life Lessons From The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Politics according to Linus ~ he was way ahead of his time ;)

Pumpkin patches can & should be sincere.

Little girls are mean.
{Especially the ones named Lucy}
Never trust 'em, even if they have a signed document.

No one, I repeat, no one should give rocks in tricks or treats bags!

Lucy: I got five pieces of candy!
Kid: I got a chocolate bar!
Another Kid: I got a quarter!
Charlie Brown: I got a rock.

Kid: I got a candy bar!
Another Kid: Boy, I got three cookies!
Lucy: Hey, I got a package of gum!
Charlie Brown: I got a rock.

Lucy: I got a popcorn ball!
Kid: I got a fudge bar!
Another Kid: I got a pack of gum!
Charlie Brown: I got a rock.

Good grief ... poor Charlie Brown.

Sisters, even when they think you're crazy for sleeping in the pumpkin patch, can be caring & kind.

Music is a powerful influence.
It moves people ...it even moves dogs.
Turn up the volume & watch this clip!

And this inevitably raises the question, why on earth did someone not write any pumpkin carols?

All of us should have child-like faith ... an unshakable belief in something ...
even if it is the Great Pumpkin!

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

I was putting the finishing touches on yesterday's blog when I ran across
these wonderful quotes from Charles Swindoll.
I must admit, I know virtually nothing about him, other than he's a preacher,
but his quotes are definitely inspiring.

Here are a few that I really loved & wanted to share:

“Anything under God's control is never out of control.”

“The pursuit of happiness is a matter of choice...it is a positive attitude we choose to express.
It is not a gift delivered to our door each morning, nor does it come through the window.
And it is certain that our circumstances are not the things that make us joyful.
If we wait for them to get just right, we will never laugh again.

“The longer I love, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.
Attitude, to me, is more important than facts.
It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances,
than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do.
It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill.
It will make or break a company...a church....a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace
for that day.
We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.
We cannot change the inevitable.
The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude...
I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
And so it is with you...we are in charge of our attitudes.”

“Real integrity stays in place whether the test in adversity or prosperity.”

“Learning more truth is a poor and cheap substitute for stopping and putting
into action the truth already learned”

“Disagreements are inevitable.
There will always be opposing viewpoints and a variety of perspectives on most subjects.
Tastes differ as well as preferences.
That is why they make vanilla and chocolate and strawberry ice cream,
why they build Fords and Chevys, Chryslers and Cadillacs, Hondas and Toyotas.
That is why our nation has room for Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals
- and moderates.
The tension is built into our system.
It is what freedom is all about, including religious freedom.
I am fairly firm in my theological convictions, but that doesn't mean you (or anyone)
must agree with me.
All this explains why we must place so much importance on leaving "wobble room"
in our relationships.
One's theological persuasion may not bend, but one's involvement with others must.”
