The Hundred-Foot Journey || My Thoughts About This Sweet Movie

bicycle + basket + girl wearing skirt/dresses
+ beautiful scenery from a foreign country
{namely Italy or France}
family + food + love

These are the key components that I love in a movie.

I get pretty excited when I'm watching a movie & any of the above pops up!
Not ganna lie.

And I have, yet one more time, picked one that has several of these things.

What?!
How does this happens?
I don't know these things just by looking at the case or reading the review.

But when I pick a movie, like I'm totally the one picking it,
I somehow end up choosing one with these things!
It's like I'm drawn to them by some inexplicable force.

I blogged about the irony once before here.
You must click over & read just so you can see the legitimacy of this whole phenomenon.

Last night, we watched The Hundred-Foot Journey, a movie I picked.
{We had a code to get a freebie from our On Demand package.}

I have to admit, I was feeling iffy during the first 15 minutes,
as to where the movie was going or if we were going to to stick with it.
{It's a bit slow in the beginning.}
Once the story gets started though, in the beautiful French countryside nonetheless,  I knew I was all in.

Now, I'm certainly no movie critic & wouldn't know how to correctly write a review if I tried,
but I'd describe this one as a feel-good movie with a great ending,
which is precisely the 'easy to watch & enjoy' kind of movies I often prefer.
Yea, I'm the mushy, hopeless romantic type ;)
It checks all the right boxes ... all the ones I mentioned at the beginning of this post.

The location is beyond gorgeous!!
The real town where the movie was shot is the French medieval village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in Tarn-et-Garonne in the Midi-Pyrenees region of France.
Located in the Alps in the southwest area of France, it is said to be a perfect travel destination
because it's not as heavily visited by tourists.
{Duly noted & added to bucket list.}

These 2 buildings are where the story takes place.
This is the hundred-foot journey.

Another thing I loved:  hearing the French language.
Gaahhh...it's so beautiful & romantic ;)

And then there's the food aspect of the story.
Don't all real romances have good food as a common thread?
To say that The Hundred-Foot Journey seduces the heart through food in as understatement.

Isn't this quaint, oh-so-French kitchen just adorable?

Outdoor dining & string lights hanging above = perfection!

And there are several quotes I like from the film, I am completely crazy about this one:
FOOD IS MEMORIES.
That certainly rings true in my life.

Here's the clip:

And I just can't get enough of Marguerite's dresses!!

The other big theme throughout this movie is FAMILY.

Family is a huge priority in The Hundred-Foot Journey.
The main character, Hassan, places himself within the context of his family legacy from the very first page.
I love how he introduces his own story by starting with the story of his grandfather ...
And this theme stays strong to the very end of the movie.
Although Hassan found great success, he was lonely & ultimately longing for his family.
His joy was somewhat hollow without having them to share it with.
We see the importance of being a part of a bigger picture,
which is really what makes us who we are.

The Haji family is a unit throughout the movie,
a way of life which always seems to be
more strongly demonstrated & adhered to in other cultures than here in the US.
The disregard for maintaining a strong family unit by much of our society
{starting with the grandparents clear down to the youngest child}
 makes me so sad.
The breakdown of the family is a big reason our country is in the shape it's in today.
James & I have determined that teaching about the importance a strong family unit
would be a priority in our own family.
He has told our sons over & over & over through the years ... family first.
They treat us, as parents, with respect & they come to us for counsel & advice
knowing no one has their best interest at heart like we do.
He's raised them to look at their brothers as their best friends & confidants.
He's trained them about the importance of being loyal to your family
& has said to them countless times, "Remember, you are a Pennington."

This has hung on our wall for many years.
{sorry it's blurry}

 Be true to who you are and the family name you bear.

Our family motto is 'God & Family.'
When the boys hug their dad at night or when they are leaving, that is what they say,
'God & Family'.

In September, James bought each of our sons a ring with our family crest on it.
{For years, they all worked together researching the Pennington crest
& deciding the things they would add to it ... there's a certain amount of variability.}
They worked with a jeweler to get the design just right.
There are some awesome shots of all 4 of the Pennington men at the weddings
with their rings & I'll share it as soon as I can get it.

So, you can see how important family is to us
& why that theme resonated so deeply with me.

In the movie, Papa says these words,
"Remember sweet boy, you are a Haji. Always remember. A Haji".

That stays with Hassan through every important moment of his life.

Makes me think of a southern phrase that I grew up hearing ... 'Remember your raising'.
In other words, remember who you are & where you come from.

The closeness and connection of family is a gift that we all should value & hold on to,
and it ultimately will be our guiding force every step of the way.

If you are a looking for a sweet & endearing movie & haven't had the chance to see
The Hundred-Foot Journey, go for it!
It covers so many themes:  culinary, culture, family, friendship, and achieving your dream ...
& romance thrown in too.
And you know what?
It's almost Valentine's Day.
Get in the kitchen together, make a meal, & then watch this movie!

More Than Just a Cup of Tea

I have the best of family & friends.
I mean, I really do.
Some of the sweetest things I own are not things I've bought for myself.
No, they are treasures that have been given to me from people that I love & hold dear.
And each & every time I see them or use them, my heart is full, all over again.

I was warmed from head to toe to heart tonight by a delicious cup of hot tea.
I could hardly wait to use this gorgeous tea pot.
Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride tea = amazing!
Especially after sweetening it with Winter White honey, straight from The Savannah Tea Company.
And how about the Charlie Brown cup?
On the back, it talks about being a friend.

Thank you, Stacy, for the tea pot, tea, & all the other goodies in the basket.
And to Jenny, our mutual love for Peanuts are the ties that bind ;)
Thank you much.
And lastly to Garrett & Winnie ...
they brought us back the honey when they honeymooned there in October.

All of these things came together tonight just like they were meant to be together from the start.

And that's how I think of us as family & friends ... we were just meant to be.

If I had a quarter for every time you've enriched my life, I'd indeed be wealthy.

The Thanksgiving House

Last we spoke, I was dealing with a Thanksgiving crisis.
Ya know, my rotten pumpkin centerpiece ... remember that little ordeal?!

Let me jog your memory.

A trip to Old Time Pottery saved the day.
In fact, next to a real pumpkin, I don't think I could have found anything sweeter
than this creamy corn husk pumpkin.
Pure delight =)

Out with the old rotten, in with the new.

The pumpkin, candles with the gold dots, & the cream napkins are the only new things on the table.

Everything else, goodies from  my fall stash & the china cabinet.

It's simple & that's exactly what I was going for.

Pine cones are ridiculously wonderful & I just can't get enough of them.
Right before my guests arrived, I made place cards & placed below the pine cones,
but I forgot to snap a pic of those.

My pumpkin-colored wall always fits in during the fall season ... & that's when I'm most grateful to have it.
Otherwise throughout the year, I'm secretly wishing it was grey.
Shhh...just between us ;)
I love my dining room, my big ol' table ... but not loving Cooper's tennis ball under it.
I missed that when I was tidying up for the picture.

My mom recently gave me this huge live plant.
I'm going to try my best to keep it thriving like she has.
And my antique decoy duck, I just love that thing, as strange as it may seem.

Seems fitting ... Thanksgiving blessings right about the silhouettes of our 3 sons.
They are our greatest blessings, indeed.

My china cabinet is usually brimming over with ironstone,
but I'm enjoying it in a variety of places throughout the house right now.

Here are a few of my most treasured pieces.

Above my lovely builders grade cabinets are a few fall touches.
{I may bite the bullet & paint these babies in the spring.}

And for some odd reason, I don't think I've ever shown my green pantry door on the blog.
I painted this in the spring of 2013 & honestly, I am thinking I may give it a new look pretty soon too.
{It was my first time to try the Vaseline paint treatment & it was pretty neat!}
My clear wreath hook snapped in two right before my Thanksgiving guests arrived,
so I had to use my gold one.

We had to set up an additional table for our guests, so we moved our pub table into this corner
to serve as the dessert area.
The beautiful bouquet, given to us by a sweet friend for Pastor Appreciation, was the perfect centerpiece.
The fall picture on the wall came home with me from SC when we were there last year.
{Lots of my decor has come from SC -- sweet memories every time I look at it all.}

The little square box on the wall is an old crayon box that says 'Liberty' on the front
{James lived in Liberty when we met}.
And I'd love to have a few more old cutting boards.
{They are so expensive!}

One of my very favorite fall accessories is the 'Live Within Your Harvest' sign.
I LOVE that message ... & that way of life.

I usually fill up these containers with corn kernels, but this year I chose candy corn.
So whimsical & fun.
The clay leaf on the table was made by Garrett years ago ... the only one from the 3 boys that's survived.

And I'm even sharing this blurry pic cause I loved these pilgrims, new pieces that I got on clearance last year.
They sat with my old picnic basket on top of the armoire.

And I broke my own rule this year in regards to my Christmas tree!
I never put my tree up before Thanksgiving when we are hosting it at our house.
But this year, I just couldn't wait to put it up!
So my compromise was this:
tree up & lights on, but only natural or woodsy colored/themed decor on the tree.
No other Christmas decor anywhere ... all fall stuff still out on display.
I even came up with a name for it:  ThanksMAS ... or ChristGIVING.
Ha ... I loved it.

So warm & woodsy!

So, house was in order & ready for Thanksgiving dinner.
Here is James getting us started ... reading scriptures of Thanksgiving before the prayer.

I didn't do too well with taking pics after everyone arrived =(
Wish I had shots of each person.

Here's some of our delicious meal.

As you can tell, we feasted!!

And almost that quickly, Thanksgiving is now a memory
& we'll look forward to it again next year.

Thanks for spending a few minutes visiting the blog.
I sure enjoyed reflecting back on a day that went by way too quickly.

Next up:
It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas!
